Grassroots football is at its best when the pitch is filled with enthusiastic players and the touchline is filled with positive support.
Parents, carers and spectators play an enormous part in creating the atmosphere on matchday. A few encouraging words, applause for good play and reassurance after a mistake can make a genuine difference to a young player’s confidence and enjoyment.
In March 2026, more than one million young players across over 200 leagues were involved in the FA’s National Silent Support Weekend. Spectators were encouraged to applaud good play but avoid shouting instructions, allowing children to make their own decisions and communicate with their teammates.
The initiative does not suggest that every grassroots match should take place in silence. Instead, it highlights an important distinction between supporting a child and coaching them from the touchline.
During a match, players are already processing information from teammates, coaches and the game happening around them. Several different instructions being shouted at once can quickly become confusing—particularly when a parent’s instruction differs from that of the coach.
Allowing players to make decisions also means allowing them to make mistakes. Choosing the wrong pass, losing possession or missing a chance are all important parts of learning the game.
At Beacons FC, we encourage spectators to:
- Applaud effort and good play from both teams
- Offer encouragement rather than instructions
- Show respect towards referees and opposition coaches
- Avoid criticising individual players
- Remember that the game belongs to the children
Our matchday guidance asks everyone to encourage players, applaud their efforts and treat opponents and officials respectfully. These standards help ensure that Beacons remains a welcoming, family-focused club.
Results will always matter to young players, and healthy competition is an important part of football. But the way children feel while playing matters too.
With supportive coaches and a positive touchline behind them, players have the freedom to be brave, express themselves and enjoy the game—and that is something every member of the Beacons community can help to create.
