Futurefit

The 2026/27 season marks the beginning of a new era for grassroots youth football in England.

The FA’s new FutureFit framework has been created to give children a more enjoyable and age-appropriate introduction to the game. The changes are designed to increase involvement, encourage more touches of the ball and allow players to develop at a pace that suits their age.

One of the biggest changes is the introduction of 3v3 football for Under-7s. With fewer players on each side, children should spend less time watching the action and more time passing, dribbling, defending, scoring and making decisions.

Smaller-sided football will also continue for longer as players progress through the age groups:

  • Under-7s will play 3v3
  • Under-8s and Under-9s will play up to 5v5
  • Under-10s and Under-11s will play up to 7v7
  • Under-12s and Under-13s will play up to 9v9
  • 11v11 football will begin at Under-14

Previously, most players made the transition to 11v11 at Under-13. Moving that change back by a year will give children more time and space on the ball before progressing to the full-size game.

Restarts are also evolving. At younger age groups, kick-ins and dribble-ins will help get the ball back into play quickly, reducing stoppages and giving players more opportunities to use the ball at their feet.

At Beacons FC, we believe youth football should help children develop skills, confidence, friendships and a genuine love of the game. The new framework reflects many of the principles already valued throughout grassroots football: greater participation, age-appropriate development and, above all, enjoyment.

There will naturally be a period of adjustment for players, coaches and parents, but the aim is a positive one: to make football an even better experience for every child who steps onto the pitch.
